Podiatry Awareness

Despite the critical role podiatrists play in healthcare—managing everything from diabetic foot complications to sports injuries—public awareness of the profession remains surprisingly low. Our recent study, published in the Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association, explored this gap by comparing self-perceived and actual knowledge of podiatry among high school and college students.

The results were striking: while many students believed they had a basic understanding of podiatry, few could accurately describe what podiatrists do or the extent of their training. Most associated podiatry solely with nail care or minor foot issues, overlooking its surgical and medical scope. This disconnect suggests a lack of early exposure and highlights an opportunity for more outreach and education—especially as students begin to consider healthcare careers. Fortunately, growing recognition of this gap has sparked efforts to raise awareness through targeted marketing, educational podcasts, and advisor outreach—initiatives that offer a promising foundation for elevating the visibility of the profession.

Podiatry is more than just feet—it’s a vital medical specialty that deserves greater visibility. Read the full study here.
