Dean’s Chat Episode 5: Residency Match Tips

The very first podcast I ever had the opportunity to participate in was Dean’s Chat, where I appeared as a fourth-year podiatric medical student. During that episode, I shared my experiences with the residency match process and offered advice to students coming up behind me. The residency match is a pivotal step in every podiatrist’s journey—it can be both stressful and rewarding—and I wanted to provide insight and encouragement to those preparing for it.

Dean’s Chat is hosted by my former dean, Dr. Jeffrey Jensen, who has been a tremendous mentor and guiding influence throughout my training. His support and leadership played a significant role in shaping me into the podiatrist I am today. Having the chance to sit down with him in such a meaningful format was both an honor and a memorable milestone early in my professional journey.

Later, I had the privilege of returning to the podcast again as a resident, which is also linked on my research & features page. This second appearance gave me the chance to reflect on how much I had grown since my first recording and to share new perspectives from the residency side of training.

Looking back, these podcast experiences stand out not just because they were opportunities to contribute to a larger conversation within the profession, but also because they allowed me to reflect on my own growth and development. The residency match process, while rigorous, is essential in ensuring young podiatrists receive the comprehensive training necessary to be confident, competent, and prepared to step into independent practice. Participating in Dean’s Chat enabled me to pass down knowledge, mentorship, and encouragement to the next generation—just as Dr. Jensen did for me. Listen to the full podcast here.
